Food safety 

As babies are learning to eat solid foods, they might experience choking. 

It is important to:

  • always watch them while they eat
  • not let them move around while they eat
  • use the safety harness or seat belt when they sit in a highchair
  • test the temperature of food before giving it to your baby

Foods to avoid before 12 months

  • Honey
  • Raw or uncooked eggs and foods containing raw eggs like home-made mayonnaise


 

Foods that can make your baby choke

  • Small hard foods (nuts, undercooked pieces of hard fruit and vegetables, popcorn)
  • Small slippery foods (whole grapes and cherry tomatoes)
  • Fruit that has seeds in them (cherries, apricots and nectarines)
