Our Story
In 2007, Healthy Beginnings began as one of the world's first research programs to support families during pregnancy and the early years to help reduce the risk of childhood obesity. Child and Family Health Nurses visited families at home from pregnancy until children were 2 years of age, providing practical support on breastfeeding, introducing solid foods, sleep, active play, screen time and healthy family habits.
Building the evidence
Two large research trials involving more than 1,500 families showed that Healthy Beginnings helped parents establish healthy habits early in life. The program demonstrated improvements in breastfeeding, infant feeding practices, physical activity and healthy growth, providing strong evidence that early support can reduce the risk of childhood obesity.
International recognition
The success of Healthy Beginnings attracted international recognition. The program was recognised by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services as an evidence-based model for early childhood home visiting and childhood obesity prevention, highlighting its strong research foundation and positive outcomes for families.
