Third trimester
Religious fasting when pregnant and breastfeeding
Many religions, like Islam, Christianity, and Judaism, fast for a certain number of days. This means not eating or drinking for a set time.
Tips to keep to you and your baby are healthy and safe when fasting:
- Talk to your child and family health nurse or family doctor before fasting to make sure it is safe for you and your baby.
- Stay hydrated by drinking a lot of water and other fluids during hours you are not fasting.
- When you break your fast, eat balanced and nutritious foods like whole grains, fruits, veggies, and protein.
- Do not eat a lot of fried and sugary foods because they can make your energy spike or go up and down quickly.
- During fasting, listen to your body and rest if you need to.
If you feel sick or notice any worrying signs, stop fasting and get medical help.
