Helping your baby sleep

Every baby is different and has their own sleep needs. It takes time for babies to learn to calm down and sleep well.

Instead of feeding to calm them, try to:

  • Follow the same bedtime routine every night
  • Make the sleep area quiet and peaceful
  • Comfort your baby when they show signs that they need it

Babies sleep in cycles that last 20 to 40 minutes. They are likely to move and wake at the end of a sleep cycle. A lot of the time your baby will need you to help them go back to sleep.

The average time it takes for anyone, including babies, to fall asleep is anywhere between 30 seconds and 30 minutes. It could take up to 45 minutes if they are being resettled after a short sleep.

What makes it harder for babies to sleep

Things that may make it harder for baby to sleep well are:

  • Problems with feeding
  • Fast growth periods
  • Health issues
  • A noisy home

If your baby has any of these issues, ask your partner, family, or friends for help. Also get professional help early on. Remember, every baby is special and different. If you worry about your baby's sleep, talk to a child and family health nurse (CFHN) for help.

Your baby will develop their own sleep pattern. For example, they may sleep more in the morning and less in the afternoon (shorter naps). Look for your baby's tired signs. Help settle them to sleep or back to sleep when needed.
