Breastfeeding and returning to work

Third trimester
A A A

Many mothers can continue breastfeeding their baby when they return to work.

Talk to your employer before you go on maternity leave about your requirements and find out what options are available when you return to work. For example, is there a private place available for you to express, and is there somewhere to store the breast milk? This milk can then be fed to your baby with a spoon, bottle or cup (depending on age) at a later time.

Buying an electric pump will allow you to express milk a lot quicker. If your child is being cared for close to work, it may be an option for you to have a lactation break to feed your baby. In Australia you have the right to breastfeed or express milk anywhere.

The Federal Sex Discrimination Act says:

  • it is illegal for employers to discriminate against a woman because she is breastfeeding
  • employers must support you with your needs if you want to breastfeed or express milk at work.
