Parents need to look after themselves too.

It is important to care for your own health and wellbeing as a parent. Taking care of yourself helps you be the best parent you can be. You are doing a great job.

  • Make time for yourself. Think about how you feel emotionally, physically, mentally and socially.
  • Talk about any problems in your relationships or get help if you need it. Your well-being affects your baby.
  • If you need support, talk to a professional like your doctor, nurse, or a helpline.

Your health

  • Have 2 fruits and 5 vegetables each day. 
  • Drink water regularly.
  • Be active for 30 minutes each day.
  • Make time to relax and rest.
  • Ask for help if needed. Call a helpline or get free health coaching by calling 1300 806 258.

 

Staying active as a family

  • Play together at the park: kick a ball or run.
  • Go for a bike ride or swim together.
  • Take walks, have picnics, fly a kite.

 

Social support

  • Join breastfeeding or parenting groups.
  • Stay connected with family and friends.
  • Join playgroups and story times at libraries.
  • Try online parenting forums for support and advice.
